The Royalties Committee keeps AAR Members informed about royalties issues
and changes in procedures and arrangements. Particular focus has been lately
on the shifting landscape of eBook publishing and the pros and cons of
the Agency model vs. Amazon's proposed net profits share of the eBook list price.
We continually work with publishers to encourage them to improve the way
that royalty and sales information is conveyed to Agents, with the objective
of making that communication as transparent as possible.
The committee has had or scheduled 2010 meetings on eBook issues with several publishers:
- George Gibson of Bloomsbury/Walker, discussing the P&L of a physical book compared to an eBook
- Madeline McIntosh of Random House, discussing their electronic publishing program
- Brendan Cahill of Open Road, discussing their eBook program
We are in discussion, spring 2010, with Simon & Schuster about revising and shortening its royalty statements.
